View Quickmap Layers in Google Earth

Quickmap allows map layers to be overlayed in Google earth, or Google Earth photography to be pasted into Quickmap.

To overlay Quickmap in Google Earth:

Select the Google Theme which will ensure the parcels and NZ Layers are hollow. Otherwise, adjust symbology to meet individual requirements.

NOTE: Google Earth is required to be installed on the computer. See http://earth.google.com/ for downloads and licensing agreements.

From within Quickmap select View->View Map in Google Earth off the menu (or Shift/F3).

There are four options:

1. View > View Map in Google Earth > MAP – this creates a Raster file which you CAN then adjust/move around in google earth
NOTE: Rasta images are not ortho rectified so it may be necessary to realign boundaries.
2. View > View Map in Google Earth > PARCELS – this creates a KML file which you CANNOT adjust/move around in google earth
3. View > View Map in Google Earth > PARCELS – this creates a KML file which you CANNOT adjust/move around in google earth

4. The fourth option is to tick ON ‘Opaque Polygons’ which fills in the polygon in an opaque shade of white.

Google images are not ortho rectified so it may be necessary to realign boundaries

It is important to NOT save Quickmap overlays in the Temporary Places or My Places folder. To save a file, open out the folder, right mouse click on ‘Quickmap Export’  and select Save As. This will provide the opportunity to save the file as a .kmz file.

Copy and Paste Image from Google Earth:

It is possible to copy images from Google Earth and paste them into Quickmap.

NOTE: This functionality can be used to copy and paste an image from any other source. However, unless the image is an ecw with built-in co-ordinates, the image will need to be manually placed and resized to the correct location.

In Google Earth select Edit->Copy Image off the menu, then in Quickmap press CTRL/V, or EDIT > paste

You will be asked to select which Layer to paste the image to. NOTE: The Layer must be an image layer

Quickmap is able to automatically place the Google Earth photo in the correct location.

NOTE: Quickmap does not license the use of Google Earth, so you need to make sure your Google license agreement allows this.

If Quickmap can’t automatically figure out where to place the image, it provides you easy-to-use tools to move, resize or rotate the image into the correct location. If the image is rotated, there will automatically be a black border indicating the rotation from the original insertion point. Short-cut keys can assist in moving the image.

The mouse can also be used to drag the image into the desired location.

Once the image is accepted into the layer, the positioning cannot be modified, the image needs to be reinserted.

To delete the image, make sure it is selected with the Info Tool, and push delete.
