How To Install Quickmap (Server-Client / Network Share Installation) – Quickmap V7

This article explains how to install Quickmap as Server-Client install, also known as a Minimal Install. This topology allows you to install Quickmap data to a network share on a server, then share that data with client computers running a Minimal install of Quickmap; instead of installing the data on each PC. This setup is recommended for users with not enough disk space on their PC or wish to manage the data updating from a single, central location. To do a Server-Client install, clients must have constant access to a network share on a server. If this does not describe your computer environment, you may wish to consider a Typical Installation of Quickmap.

The Server-Client installation is composed of two parts, the server install and the client install.

Server Installation

On the computer that is going to house the data (the server):

  1. Log on as administrator to ensure you have enough privileges to install the software.
  2. Close all open programs, including any anti-virus software, so that only Windows is running.
  3. Insert Quickmap Disk 1 and run setup.exe, this will start the Setup Wizard.
❗ Note: You may have more than one Disk 1, depending on whether you have bought North, South or all of NZ data. It doesn’t matter which Disk 1 you start with, you will install the others later.
  4. Click Next and select Typical and click Next.
  5. Change the Server Location to the directory you want the data to be loaded to on your server.
  6. Select the Everyone option and click Next.
  7. The install process will now copy folders and files to the destination location.
  8. Click Close when the installation has completed.
  9. If this is the first time QuickMap has been installed on this computer, you will also be asked to reboot your computer at the end of the installation of Disk 1.  This is to ensure the QuickMap font is registered to enable you to read the program accurately.
  10. If you have additional Disk 1 disks, repeat steps 1 – 9 for each Disk 1 disk.
  11. Now install Disk 2 and run Setup.exe.
❗ Note: Again, depending on whether you have bought North, South or all of NZ data, you may have more than one Disk 2. It doesn’t matter which disk you start with, you will install the others later.
  12.  When the install of Disk 2 has finished, repeat step 11 for each other Disk 2 that you have.
❗ Note: You only need to install the latest set of Disk 2 disks. For example, if you have been sent disks from January, Febuary and March, you only need to install the March Disk 2 disks.

Client Installation

On each computer that you wish to run Quickmap from:

  1. Log on as administrator to ensure you have enough privileges to install the software.
  2. Close all open programs, including any anti-virus software, so that only Windows is running.
  3. Map the server network drive containing QuickMap from the client PC that you want to install e.g. \\MyServer\\QmapShare
  4. Run Setup.exe from the Qmap folder on the server share and choose the MINIMAL install option when prompted. This will install around 20Mb of software on the PC, and the data will remain on the server.
❗ Note: Setup is run off the server, NOT off the CD-ROM.
  5. Run QuickMap on the PC. If QuickMap asks you to register, then use the QuickMap registration key provided to register the software. Each client must register. Registration can also be accessed from the Help Menu within QuickMap.
  6. When you start QuickMap a dialog box may appear saying newer software has been found and gives you the option to update to the newer version. You should normally answer Yes to this question.
